VCU Student National Dental Association Impressions Program

VCU Student National Dental Association is hosting its annual Impressions Program on February 4, 2012. This program is designed for all students interested in pursuing dental or dental hygiene education. The program will be held at VCU School of Dentistry and will consist of dental activities; professional speakers, DAT prep advice, mock interviews, financial advising, and lunch will be provided. In the past this program has been successful in providing students with valuable information about dentistry and provides and accurate representation of what dentistry is about. Below, the flyer and application for the program are attached. It would be greatly appreciated if you could pass along the information to all students who may be interested.  If students have any food allergies or vegetarian or vegan preferences,please note on the back of the application form.

Virginia Emergency Medicine Associates Scribe Program at the Inova Fair Oaks Hospital Emergency Department

Virginia Emergency Medicine Associates (VEMA) is recruiting applicants for our scribe program at the Inova Fair Oaks Hospital Emergency Department in Fairfax, Virginia. Medical scribes receive first-hand exposure to patient care in a fast-paced emergency room setting.  Applications for the 2012-2013 cycle will be available on our website beginning March 1.

Our acceptance rate to medical school is 89%, and our acceptance rate to PA school is 100%.

This is a full-time, paid position targeted at individuals interested in gaining experience in health care.   In particular, the program is targeted toward students interested in eventually attending medical school or PA school.

The Role of the Scribe

• Recording patient histories in a web based electronic medical record (EMR)
• Transcribing details of the physical exam and patient orders in the EMR
• Documenting procedures performed by the physician
• Order lab tests, X-ray/CT imaging, and other patient evaluation studies in real time and continually monitor progress and results
• Recording physician dictated diagnoses, prescriptions, and instructions

The Experience

• Accompany emergency physicians to the bedside for the evaluation and treatment of acutely ill patients
• Observe medical resuscitation, including cardiac and respiratory arrest cases
• Observe ER procedures – laceration repair, lumbar punctures, central lines, chest tubes, joint reductions, and intubations

GlobeMed at the University of Virginia

GlobeMed at the University of Virginia is a student-run nonprofit organization partnered with grassroots NGO Build Your Future Today in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Together we campaign to raise money for our Safe Child and Mother Care project, hold globalhealthu discussions at every meeting, and form grow on-site internships.  No matter what your major is, health is a human right. University of South Carolina School of Medicine – Greenville

Please inform pre-med students at your institution about fall 2012 enrollment opportunities at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine – Greenville. Since our preliminary accreditation by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education on 10/4/11 gave us a late start in the application / admission cycle, our AMCAS application deadline for this year is extended to February 1, 2012. Although we are a School of the University of South Carolina we are separately accredited and have a different curriculum and admission process from that of University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Columbia.  Please share our web site http://greenvillemed.sc.edu with students and interested faculty alike. The Applicant section of the website explains that applicants may now update their AMCAS application to select the University of South Carolina School of Medicine – Greenville for routing of their application. 

We purposely do not have statistical cut-offs but rather consider, in a holistic manner, personal characteristics/experiences which bring added value to the learning environment, letters of recommendation, extracurricular activities, and clinical/research experience as well as GPA and MCAT metrics. In addition we place considerable importance on the interview.  We plan to admit a class made up of about 25% out-of-state and 75% in-state (SC) residents.

EVMS Summer Program for Undergraduate Research (SPUR)

The Summer Program for Undergraduate Research (SPUR) at Eastern Virginia Medical School offers several stipends of $3000 each to top applicants for a 10 week, full-time research experience.  Over 20 different research laboratories in the following research areas are available to the students who are chosen:

Cancer biology and proteomics                 Immunology
Cardiovascular biology                             Virology
Obesity and diabetes                                Neuroscience
Reproductive biology                               Ocular pharmacology
Myosin biochemistry                                Radiation biology

Looking for Help to Finance an Unpaid Health Related Summer Internship?

Once again, University Career Services (UCS) will be accepting applications for financial assistance from students who have secured summer internships. Both the Parents Committee Internship Grants and the Larry Simpson Internship Scholarship provide funds to assist students in achieving their career-related goals. I am writing to ask for your assistance in informing the students you work with of these opportunities!

The Parents Committee Internship Grants (PCIG) are merit-based and current 2^nd and 3^rd year students of all majors are eligible. Applicants must have secured an unpaid summer internship in an area of public service (i.e., civic engagement and public policy; economic and business development; education, both K-12 and lifelong learning; environment, both planned and natural; and health). This year we are pleased to offer grants of $3,000 each to 16 students! Grant recipients write a journal throughout the internship process, and via the University Career Services’ website, their experiences will be shared with the U.Va. community. The application deadline for the grants is noon Monday, March 26, 2012.

In addition to the grants, UCS coordinates the Larry Simpson Internship Scholarship. This scholarship is a $2,000 need and merit-based award available to a rising 4^th year in the College of Arts and Sciences who has secured a summer internship in any career field.  This scholarship is generously sponsored by Betty Shotton, CLAS ’74 and honors Larry Simpson who served as the first director of U.Va.’s career services office from 1968-1998. The application deadline for the scholarship is noon Monday, April 2, 2012.
